Metafora coffee table by Lella and Massimo Vignelli for Martinelli Luce

Massimo and Lella Vignelli's Metafora coffee table for Martinelli Luce is an enthralling piece of design. The table features a large glass square, resting atop four pieces of Black Marquina marble, each shaped to represent a form of Euclidean geometry. The sphere represents the globe, the pyramid represents the Egyptian civilization, the cylinder represents the Roman Empire and the black cube represents the black stone of Kabba at Mecca. The elements can be positioned freely, allowing for endless compositions.

Made in Italy, circa 1979.
