Ekstrem chair by Terje Ekstrøm for Stokke
When Norwegian designer Terje Ekstrøm created his eponymous chair in the 1970s, it was a radical departure from the conventions of Scandinavian furniture design. The Ekstrem — which translates to "extreme" — is a colorful, squiggly, and playful masterpiece of seating design.
Despite its wild form, the chair's foam-encased steel frame is sturdy and surprisingly comfortable and provides endless opportunities for use: Face forward, backwards, or to the side.
This is a vintage Ekstrem chair, produced around 1984, when Ekstrøm found a furniture maker to bring his designs to market.
The chair is in very good vintage condition for its age. No rips or tears in the upholstery. Where the two sides of the chair's frame meet, there is some separation of the fabric — a common occurrence in vintage Ekstrem chairs.
