Womb chair by Eero Saarinen for Knoll

The womb chair, designed by Finnish architect Eero Saarinen, was a revolutionary approach to seating when it debuted in 1948. The design was a product of a creative brief from Florence Knoll, who "was sick and tired of the one-dimensional lounge chair…long and narrow. I want a chair I can sit sideways in or any other way I want."

The result, a fiberglass and resign shell constructed with techniques honed by commercial shipbuilders, and covered with foam and fabric, was released by Knoll in the late '40s as the Model 70 chair. But, as Saarinen explained, it quickly adopted its iconic nickname. "It was designed on the theory that a great number of people have never really felt comfortable and secure since they left the womb. The chair is an attempt to rectify this maladjustment in our civilization." 

This contemporary edition is upholstered in Knoll's classic boucle, pumpernickel.
